Background

The 2014 Philippine Basketball Assocation (PBA) Commissioner's Cup is the second conference of the 2013-14 PBA season. The rules of the tournament allow for multiple foreign players, or "imports", with restrictions on height, to be included on team rosters (on height restrictions). This is opposed to the other two tournaments in the season, such as the traditional All-Filipino conference, which allows only Filipino players to compete, or the Governor's Cup, which allows only one "import" per team.

On April 21, 2014, the PBA Commissioner's Cup began its Quarterfinal Playoffs with the following teams, seeded 1 to 8, respectively: Talk N Text, San Miguel, Alaska, Rain or Shine, Meralco, San Mig Coffee, Air 21, Bgy. Ginebra.

Talk N Text holds twice-to-beat advantage over Ginebra; San Miguel has twice-to-beat advantage over Air 21. Alaska, Rain Or Shine, Meralco and San Mig Coffee have to beat their respective Q'finals opponents twice.

Intermediate results

On April 22, Bgy Ginebra was eliminated after 84-97 loss to Talk N Text.[1] 2nd Seeded San Miguel lost the first playoff match against Air 21 (92-79).

On April 23, The Meralco Bolts and the Alaska Aces will try to punch their tickets to the final four on Wednesday in Game Two of their respective quarterfinals series.

The Bolts will battle the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters at 8 p.m. live over TV5. The defending champion Aces open the bill at 5:45 p.m. against the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers live over AksyonTV.

Results of April 23: The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters turned back a late charge from the Meralco Bolts for an 102-93 victory in Game Two of their quarterfinals series. The forced a win-or-go-home Game Three between the two teams on Saturday.

Down by double-digits at halftime against an Alaska team on a six-game winning streak, the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers dug deep in the second half to hack out a hard-earned 70-65 victory. The Mixers, who won the PBA’s last two titles, leaned on their championship heart to force a deciding Game Three.

The Quarterfinals will be followed by Best-of-Five Semifinals, then, Best-of-Five Finals.

The Commissioner's Cup is projected to finish in late May 2014.
