The next big frontier in smart watches will be cuffless blood pressure measurement. Wrist cuff monitors have been around for a while. Samsung’s Galaxy recent smartwatch models have claimed this feature but were a bit of a letdown, they need regular manual calibration, an active measurement taken by the user, and even then it is still not sufficiently accurate which caused them difficulty in getting regulatory approval in key markets.
A first promising version of the required technology has been announced on 7 August 2024 by a Caltech team: "First Noninvasive Method to Continually Measure True Blood Pressure".
They report that the frequency at which an artery resonates when struck by ultrasound waves changes depending on the pressure of the blood it contains. Measurement requires three parameters — the artery's radius, the thickness of the artery's walls, and artery skin tension.
The likely contenders for the technology are, in alphabetical order:
This replaces a similar prediction question which matured in the end of 2023 with the result "none". The timeframe for progress was underestimated. The new question starts with the expired question's priors.
